All three sizes come in a standard long gun capacity and a Pro Flex capacity, and Pro Flex trades four or five rifle slots for adjustable shelving. Behind that sits a 12 gauge body, eight or ten quarter-inch locking bars, three hardened plates against drilling, and a slip-clutch handle. It sits in the lower half of the Balanced tier in the Liberty Safe lineup, above the entry gun safes and below the 11 gauge series.

This is the wrong safe if every slot needs to hold a rifle, because you will pay for interior flexibility you never use. This series specifies a slip-clutch handle and hardened plates. Seventy-five minutes is a mid-range fire rating rather than a long one. And if the collection is already at fifty long guns, the standard interior on the Colonial 50 is the ceiling.

What Makes the Colonial Series Different

Bar count steps with size rather than staying flat: eight bars on the two smaller safes and ten on the 50. Every bar is quarter-inch hardened steel at 4 inches wide, the same specification used well up the line. Lock protection is three hardened plates plus the slip-clutch handle, which covers drilling and forced handle rotation as separate problems. Both lock choices carry UL listings covering the lock itself.

The body is 12 gauge steel across all three sizes. Locking bars are quarter-inch hardened steel at 4 inches wide, with eight on the Colonial 23 and 30 and ten on the Colonial 50. The door carries a heat-activated seal that expands under heat.

The slip-clutch handle is the piece worth understanding. If someone applies force to the handle rather than opening the lock, the clutch slips instead of driving the boltwork, so the attack does not transfer into the mechanism. Behind the lock sit three hardened steel plates against a drill attack.

Two interiors and two capacities, both offered from the factory. Standard holds up to 25, 30, or 50 long guns by size; Pro Flex holds up to 21, 25, or 45 and gives the difference back as adjustable shelving. The interior is fully upholstered either way, with an economy door storage panel installed at the factory. Work out how many of your firearms are long guns before you choose, because that single number decides this.

The two smaller sizes are 60.5 inches tall and 22 inches deep, at 30 or 36 wide. The Colonial 50 is a different body at 72.5 inches tall, 42 wide, and 27.5 deep. Doorway requirements follow: 24 inches for the 23 and 30, and 29.5 for the 50. That shallower 22 inch depth on the smaller sizes is what makes them fit rooms the bigger safes cannot.

Security Construction & Burglary Protection

Colonial answers two different attacks with two different pieces. Three hardened plates cover a drill on the lock, and the slip-clutch handle covers someone forcing the boltwork through the handle. Eight or ten quarter-inch bars spread a pry load across the door, and the body carries UL RSC Level 1 with a California DOJ listing. Advertised gun counts describe an interior packed with slim stocks and nothing mounted on top, which almost no real collection matches. Colonial is unusual in publishing two figures per size, one standard and one for the upgraded interior. What we see in showrooms is a real-world count landing about a third below the label.

Usable space is what remains once scopes, slings, and anything on a shelf take their room. Cubic feet describe the box; they say nothing about whether a rifle with a mounted optic fits the slot beside another one.

A slip-clutch handle disconnects from the boltwork when force is applied to it, so twisting or levering the handle does not drive the bolts. It answers a different attack from a drill, which is what the hardened plates behind the lock are for. Neither one is a substitute for anchoring the safe.
