The First Test

A home safe does not include this.

Compartmentalization serves a real functional need for buyers with more than a few pieces. Rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and watches require different types of support to prevent scratching and tangling. The Second Test

Fire Ratings Are Not All the Same: Standard Protection Is Wrong for Pearls and Opals

Most fire-rated safes carry a Class 350 rating, meaning the interior stays below 350 degrees Fahrenheit during the rated fire duration. That threshold was chosen around the paper. Documents, currency, and paper records are safe below 350 degrees. If your safe contains only paper, Class 350 is the right floor.

For jewelry, the thresholds that matter are different and considerably lower. Gold and platinum are not your concern at residential fire temperatures. Their melting points are well above 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit, and solid gold pieces survive structure fires intact. The vulnerability is in gemstones, settings, and treatments, and in metals like silver that are damaged by smoke even without reaching high temperatures.

Pearls are damaged above 200 degrees Fahrenheit and permanently discolored by smoke. Opals crack from rapid temperature change at the same threshold. Emeralds are oil-treated by most jewelers, and that treatment is destroyed by heat. Amber melts at 250 to 300 degrees. Turquoise absorbs smoke residue and cracks. Silver, while it melts at 1,763 degrees, is aggressively tarnished and pitted by the sulfur compounds in modern smoke even at moderate temperatures.

A Class 350 rated safe keeps its interior below 350 degrees for the rated period. By that standard, your pearl necklace is inside a safe container. By the standard of what pearls actually tolerate, it is not. If your collection includes pearls, opals, emeralds, or significant silver pieces, the fire rating you need is Class 150, which keeps the interior below 150 degrees, or better.

The Lock and Security Rating: Match the Protection to What You Are Protecting

A jewelry safe's security rating should be calibrated to the replacement value of what is inside it. For a buyer storing costume jewelry and a few sentimental pieces, an RSC I rating, the residential standard, is a reasonable baseline. For a Buckhead buyer with a collection valued at $100,000 or more, RSC I protection was tested against five minutes of hand tools. That is the starting conversation, not the ending one.

The lock quality distinction in jewelry safes is as important as the body steel. A quality jewelry safe uses a UL-listed lock: either an electronic lock certified to UL 2058 or a mechanical combination lock rated under UL 768. Uncertified electronic locks in lower-tier products have documented bypass vulnerabilities that certified locks are specifically designed to prevent. If the product page does not specify a UL lock certification, the lock is probably not certified.

Placement and Anchoring

Where to Put a Jewelry Safe, and Why Seeing One in Person Changes the Decision

Jewelry safes are almost always installed in a master bedroom closet. Atlanta homes are predominantly slab-on-grade construction, which means the floor is concrete. Floor-standing jewelry safes can be anchored directly to the slab through the closet floor, the same approach we use for full-size gun safes. A jewelry safe that is not anchored to the floor or wall can be carried out of the home in under a minute.

The location within the master closet matters less than buyers typically assume. Concealment in a closet behind clothing provides a degree of visual obstruction, but a burglar who makes it to the master closet will check the floor and standard furniture locations. What delays them is the safe's weight and anchoring, not the amount of clothing in front of it.

Interior quality is the single hardest specification to evaluate from product photos or descriptions.
