A fire rating tells you how long a safe stays below a temperature threshold. It does not tell you who tested it, under what conditions, or whether your contents stay safe the entire time. That gap is what most buyers miss.

The Core Idea
A Fire Rating Is a Specification, Not a Promise
Every fire-rated safe is built to keep the interior of the safe below a specific temperature for a specific amount of time. That is the entire definition. A 60-minute, Class 350 rating means the interior stayed below 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 60 minutes under controlled test conditions.
What that rating does not tell you: who ran the test, what the test conditions were, or whether a different safe with the same label was tested the same way.
Here is what we see constantly in our showrooms after 48 years of evaluating fire-rated safes: two products with identical printed ratings can be tested under completely different conditions. A fire rating certified by UL under the UL 72 standard and a manufacturer-developed rating both carry a number on the door. Only one of those numbers comes from a test no one controlled.

Reading the Label
Three Things to Look for on Any Fire Rating Label
Every fire rating on a safe communicates three variables: the temperature threshold the interior stayed below, the duration of the test, and who ran the test. Most buyers look at the number and stop there.
Temperature threshold
The temperature threshold tells you what you can protect. Paper survives below 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Photographs are damaged above 150 degrees. Hard drives fail above 125 degrees. A safe rated Class 350 protects paper. It does not protect photographs. A buyer protecting the wrong contents with the right-sounding number has made an expensive mistake.
Duration
How long the safe held that threshold under test, written as 30 minutes, one hour, and so on. What duration you actually need depends on how long a fire burns before suppression begins, which is the focus of the next section.
Testing body
The testing body is the variable most buyers never check. UL 72 is an independent certification from Underwriters Laboratories, tested under a standardized fire profile by a third party. Manufacturer-developed ratings are tested under conditions the manufacturer controls. Both are legal. Only one is independently verified.

Most residential gun safes carry a "UL listed" label that applies to a burglary resistance standard, not fire performance. Seeing "UL listed" on a gun safe does not mean the fire rating has been UL-verified. These are separate certifications for separate tests.

What You Are Protecting Changes the Rating You Need
Fire-rated safes are built around three protection levels, each designed for a different category of contents. Using the wrong level does not mean your safe failed. It means you bought the right product for the wrong job.
Paper documents ignite at 451 degrees Fahrenheit. A Class 350 safe keeps the interior below 350 degrees, which is enough to protect paper. Photographs, slides, and film are damaged at around 150 degrees, which means a Class 350 safe can destroy your photographs while protecting the paper next to them. Digital media and hard drives fail above 125 degrees. A Class 125 media-rated safe keeps the interior below 125 degrees.
Most buyers protecting digital media discover that a true Class 125 media safe is significantly more expensive than a standard gun safe with a fire rating. We tell them honestly: for most residential buyers, cloud backup is the better answer for hard drives. A fire-rated safe still makes sense for executed documents, firearms, and irreplaceable physical items that cannot be backed up digitally.

Duration
How Long Does Your Safe Actually Need to Protect Your Contents?
A fire rating does not tell you how long a house fire burns. It tells you how long the safe was tested. Those are different numbers in different fire scenarios.
The response window is how long a fire burns before suppression begins. A longer window changes the rating you actually need.
A typical residential fire in a metro Atlanta neighborhood with a 3-to-5-minute fire department response time may be controlled in 20 to 40 minutes. A 30-minute rating provides real coverage in that environment. A homeowner in Ellijay, Jasper, or Blairsville with a 20-to-40-minute response time is in a fundamentally different situation. The fire burns longer before suppression begins.
If your home is in a rural or north Georgia mountain community, the fire rating duration you need is not the same as what the national safe brands design their entry-level products around. Those products are built for metro fire exposure scenarios.

You cannot fully maximize both at once on the same product, and manufacturers make different tradeoffs at different price points.
Most buyers with both concerns can find a product that handles both adequately. The question is which protection is your primary priority and how to read both ratings accurately on the same label. The UL certification for burglary resistance and the UL 72 certification for fire performance are completely separate standards, and a safe can carry one without the other.
