Fire Ratings Explained: UL 72, Class 350, and What the Labels Mean

Most residential gun safes carry a "UL listed" label that has nothing to do with fire performance. The fire rating on that same safe is often self-reported by the manufacturer. Here is how to tell the difference, and what three variables to check on any fire rating you encounter.

Two safes can both display "60-minute fire protection" and have been tested under completely different conditions at completely different temperatures. The number alone tells you almost nothing. We will show you exactly what to look for instead.

The Short Answer

A Fire Rating Has Three Variables. Most Buyers Only Check One.

Before you evaluate any fire rating, there is one distinction that changes everything about how you read a product label.

Every fire rating on a safe describes three things: the temperature threshold the interior must stay below during the test, the duration of the test in minutes, and who conducted the test. Most buyers look at the duration number and stop. That leaves two of the three variables completely unchecked, and those two variables are where the differences between products actually live.

The threshold tells you what your contents can survive. Class 350 means the interior stayed below 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Class 150 means the interior stayed below 150 degrees. Class 125 means the interior stayed below 125 degrees. Paper ignites at 451 degrees, so Class 350 protects paper. Photographs and film are damaged at temperatures around 150 degrees, so Class 350 does not protect them. Hard drives can fail at temperatures above roughly 125 degrees, so Class 350 does not protect those either.

The testing body is the variable that most buyers never check at all. Underwriters Laboratories, ETL/Intertek, and the manufacturer are each a different answer to the question "who ran this test?" Each answer carries a different level of independent verification. Without knowing who ran the test, you cannot know whether the number on the brochure represents a standardized, verifiable result or a self-reported claim.

The "UL listed" label you see on most residential gun safes applies to the burglary resistance standard, not fire performance. RSC is the UL burglary standard. UL 72 is the UL fire standard. They are separate tests, conducted for separate threats, and a safe can carry one without the other. A gun safe can be UL-listed for RSC and carry a manufacturer-developed fire rating with no UL involvement in the fire test at all.

Why this matters: Once you understand the three-variable framework, you can evaluate any fire rating you encounter. The question stops being "is this safe fire-rated?" and becomes "what threshold, what duration, and who ran this test?"

What Each Rating Class Actually Protects

Fire ratings are organized into three main temperature classes. The class number is the interior temperature threshold in degrees Fahrenheit. A safe rated Class 350 was tested to keep the interior below 350 degrees for the rated duration. A safe rated Class 125 was tested to keep the interior below 125 degrees.

350°F

Paper and documents

Paper ignites at 451 degrees Fahrenheit and begins charring at lower temperatures. Class 350 keeps the interior below 350 degrees, which is enough to preserve paper documents, cash, and other paper-based items through a rated fire. Class 350 is the most common rating on residential gun safes and document safes.

Class 350 does not protect photographs, film, magnetic tape, or digital media. Those items are damaged at temperatures well below 350 degrees. A Class 350 safe is specifically protecting paper and nothing else.

150°F

Photographs and film

Photographic film and color photographs begin degrading at temperatures around 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Class 150 keeps the interior below 150 degrees, which provides meaningful protection for photographic prints, slides, negatives, and microfilm. Class 150 and Class 125 ratings also include a humidity threshold, because moisture released during a fire can damage media even when temperature alone is controlled.

Class 150 safes are significantly less common in residential markets than Class 350. They are heavier and more expensive per unit of capacity because the construction has to work harder to hold a lower interior temperature under the same external fire conditions.

125°F

Digital media and hard drives

Hard drives, USB drives, and digital storage media fail when temperatures exceed approximately 125 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Class 125 keeps the interior below 125 degrees with a maximum relative humidity of 80 percent. This is the only threshold that provides meaningful protection for digital storage.

A Class 350 gun safe will destroy hard drives, USB drives, and most digital media before its rated threshold is ever reached. Who Ran the Test

Not All Fire Ratings Come From the Same Test

The testing body variable has three possible answers, and they represent meaningfully different levels of independent verification.

UL 72: the independent standard

Underwriters Laboratories' UL 72 standard is the most rigorous and best-known fire certification for safes. A safe certified to UL 72 has been placed in a furnace and heated according to a defined time-temperature profile, with internal temperatures monitored at multiple points. For a typical Class 350 one-hour rating, the furnace ramps from ambient temperature to approximately 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit over the test duration. The safe must keep the interior below 350 degrees for the full 60 minutes to pass.

UL 72 testing also includes an explosion hazard test, in which the heated safe is rapidly cooled to verify that internal steam pressure from calcinating insulation does not cause the safe to fail explosively, and it includes an impact test, in which the heated safe is dropped to simulate the safe falling through a burning floor during a structural collapse. These two tests are almost never included in manufacturer-only testing.

A safe that carries a UL fire certification mark has been tested by an independent organization under a documented, repeatable protocol. The result is a verifiable number tied to a specific test.

ETL / Intertek: a legitimate alternative

Intertek, whose testing mark is ETL, is a nationally recognized testing laboratory that certifies safes for fire resistance under protocols that are generally modeled on UL 72. An ETL-marked fire rating represents real third-party testing by an independent organization. It is more credible than a manufacturer-only rating. Buyers who see ETL or Intertek on a fire rating label can treat it as a meaningful third-party verification, though the specific protocol details are worth asking about.

If a manufacturer has chosen to pay for independent third-party testing, that willingness itself is a signal. A manufacturer confident enough in its product to submit it to outside verification is behaving differently from one that conducts testing in its own facility under conditions it controls.

Manufacturer-developed ratings

The majority of residential gun safes sold in the United States carry manufacturer-developed fire ratings. These are real tests, and the physics of what gets measured is the same: an interior temperature sensor records how hot the inside of the safe gets during a timed heat exposure. But the test temperature, the furnace profile, the duration of the ramp-up, and the criteria for passing are all set by the manufacturer without independent verification.

Most manufacturer fire ratings use a furnace temperature of 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. UL 72 ramps to approximately 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit for a one-hour Class 350 test. Modern residential fires routinely exceed 1,500 degrees and can approach 1,800 degrees. A 60-minute manufacturer rating tested at 1,200 degrees represents a less demanding fire scenario than a 60-minute UL rating tested at 1,700 degrees. Without UL 72 certification, a fire rating is self-reported.

Three Questions to Ask Before You Trust Any Fire Rating

Whether your home is in Buckhead or Blairsville, these are the variables that tell you what you are actually buying.

When you look at a fire rating on a product page or a showroom brochure, these three questions give you the full picture.

What is the threshold?

Look for Class 350, Class 150, or Class 125 in the rating description. If you see only a duration number with no class designation, that is an incomplete label. Class 350 is the most common rating; confirm it matches what you are protecting.

What is the duration?

This is the number most buyers already look at. Thirty minutes, 60 minutes, 120 minutes. Now pair it with the threshold and the testing body to understand what that duration actually represents.

Who tested it?

Look for UL 72, ETL/Intertek, or the manufacturer's name. "UL listed" without a specific fire standard almost certainly refers to the RSC burglary certification, not fire. Ask directly: is the fire rating UL 72 certified? A dealer with nothing to hide will answer that directly.
