A buyer who cannot tell a UL-certified rating from a manufacturer-stated rating is comparing safes on a scale that may not be calibrated the same way. That buyer cannot make an accurate evaluation regardless of how carefully they read the minutes number.

What a Fire Rating Label Is Actually Telling You
A fire rating on a safe is a statement about how long the interior of the safe stays below a specified temperature when the exterior is exposed to fire. The two numbers you need to read are the temperature threshold (expressed as a Class designation) and the duration (the number of minutes). A safe rated for 60 minutes at Class 350 means the interior temperature is certified to stay below 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 60 minutes of fire exposure.
The third number that most product pages leave out is who tested it. A rating that comes from an independent certification body like UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or ETL (Intertek) was tested by engineers with no stake in the result. A rating without that certification was calculated or tested internally by the manufacturer. Both types appear on product pages with the same marketing confidence, but they are not equivalent claims.
Once you understand those three elements, you can read any fire rating you encounter. The sections below explain what the Class designations mean for different types of contents, and why the certification question changes how you evaluate every safe you compare.
What Each Rating Protects
Class 350, Class 150, Class 125: What Each Rating Protects
The UL 72 standard uses Class designations to specify the interior temperature a certified safe must maintain. Each Class corresponds to a threshold below which specific types of contents remain undamaged.
Standard Fire Protection
A Class 350 safe is certified to keep the interior below 350 degrees Fahrenheit for its rated duration. Paper begins to char at around 451 degrees Fahrenheit, so a safe that stays below 350 degrees protects paper documents throughout a fire event. This is the most common fire rating on residential safes and gun safes.
Class 350 does not protect photographs or digital media. Photos begin to suffer heat damage at temperatures well below 350 degrees, and electronic storage media fail at temperatures far lower than paper. A Class 350 gun safe keeps your paper documents intact. It does not protect USB drives, external hard drives, photo prints, or negatives.
Photo Protection
A Class 150 safe maintains an interior temperature below 150 degrees Fahrenheit. At that threshold, photographic prints, film negatives, and similar photographic materials survive a fire event. Class 150 safes are less common than Class 350 safes because their construction requires more insulation to maintain a lower interior temperature.
Digital Media Protection
A Class 125 safe maintains an interior temperature below 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Digital media, including external hard drives, USB drives, and optical media, require this lower threshold to survive. Class 125 safes are the highest-insulation, lowest-interior-temperature option and represent a small category within the residential safe market. For most residential buyers, cloud backup is a more practical solution for digital media than a Class 125 safe, which tends to be both expensive and heavily insulated at the expense of other features.

UL Certified vs. Self-Reported: The Question Product Pages Rarely Answer
"UL Listed" on a safe typically refers to the UL RSC (Residential Security Container) certification. That certification tests burglary resistance. It does not certify fire protection. A safe can display the UL logo and carry a manufacturer-stated fire rating that has never been independently tested by UL or any other third-party body.
UL fire certification for safes falls under a separate standard called UL 72. A safe with UL 72 certification had its interior temperature independently measured during a standardized fire test. A safe with a manufacturer-stated fire rating reflects the manufacturer's own calculations or internal testing, conducted without independent verification.
ETL, operated by Intertek, is an alternative certification body that runs equivalent testing to UL 72. An ETL-certified fire rating carries the same independent verification as a UL 72-certified rating.

Three Things to Check on Any Fire Rating Label
Find the Class designation
If you see Class 350, the safe was rated for paper document protection. If you see Class 150 or Class 125, it was rated for photographic or digital media. If there is no Class designation and only a duration in minutes, ask which threshold was tested.
Find the certification mark
Look for UL 72 or ETL certification explicitly stated, not just "UL Listed." If the product page says "UL Listed" without specifying UL 72, that mark refers to burglary certification. If neither UL 72 nor ETL appears alongside the fire rating, the rating is manufacturer-stated.
Match the duration to what you are protecting
A 30-minute rating is adequate if your fire scenario is a typical house fire in a metro area with a fire department response time under 10 minutes. A 60-minute rating provides a larger buffer for fires that burn longer or for rural locations where response times are longer.
Honest Limits
The Limits of a Fire Rating: What the Label Does Not Address
A fire rating certifies thermal protection during an active fire. It does not certify water resistance from firefighting water. A safe rated to 60 minutes at Class 350 may survive the fire itself and then be penetrated by water from fire suppression. Some safes include an intumescent seal that expands when heated and provides a degree of water resistance as a secondary benefit. That seal is not the same as a water resistance rating.
Fire ratings do not certify resistance to structural collapse either. If the floor above a safe gives way during a fire, the impact can compromise the safe regardless of the fire rating duration. This is not a common failure mode in residential fires, but it is relevant for safes in locations where floor structure is overhead.
