Safe prices are driven by three independent variables: size, security level, and fire rating. Each one adds to the price separately. A large safe with entry-level security and no fire rating can cost less than a small safe built to resist a professional tool attack for 30 minutes. The size alone is not what you are paying for. The Three Variables: What Each One Actually Buys
This is the framework we use in our showrooms when a customer arrives, having compared prices online and cannot explain what they are seeing. It takes about five minutes in person. In writing, it takes a little longer, but the conclusion is the same.
Size
Size determines how much your safe can physically hold. It is measured by interior cubic footage and exterior dimensions. Larger safes cost more because they use more steel, more insulation material, and more manufacturing labor to produce, but the size premium in most product lines is modest relative to the other two variables. A safe that is 50% larger in capacity might cost 15 to 25% more within the same security and fire rating tier.
What size does not change: the security level. A large safe with entry-level construction is still entry-level. More cubic footage does not mean more attack resistance. The two variables do not move together.
Security Level
Security level determines how much resistance the safe offers against a physical attack. UL certification is the only independent third-party standard for measuring this. The rating levels run from RSC (Residential Security Container, which is rated for 5 minutes against hand tools) through TL-15 and TL-30 (15 or 30 minutes against power tools) to TRTL and TXTL ratings for the highest commercial and institutional protection. Each step up the security ladder adds substantially to the price because it requires hardened steel, anti-drill plates, relockers, and thicker bolt work.
Security level is the variable that creates the most pricing surprise. A safe that is physically small but built to TL-30 specifications costs significantly more than a safe that is physically large but built to RSC specifications. The small TL-30 is not overpriced. Fire Rating
Fire rating determines how long the safe's interior stays below the temperature at which your contents are damaged. For paper documents, the critical threshold is 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Above that temperature, paper chars. For digital media, the threshold is 125 degrees. Each safe's fire rating specifies a duration (typically 30, 60, or 120 minutes) and a tested interior threshold. Higher fire ratings require more insulation material, which adds weight and cost, but the fire rating premium is independent of security level. A 60-minute fire rating on an RSC-level safe costs less than a 60-minute fire rating on a TL-30, but both add the same duration cost to their respective platforms.
