Steel gauge and bolt count are the two construction specs buyers encounter most often. Both require the same correction: the intuitive read is backwards. On a steel gauge, lower numbers mean thicker steel. On bolt count, more bolts without context is a number that tells you less than most buyers think.

A safe with 10-gauge body steel is significantly more resistant to attack than one with 14-gauge body steel, even though 14 is a larger number. The gauge system was designed around manufacturing tolerances, not consumer intuition. Every buyer who has not been told this reads gauge numbers backwards, and product pages built around big numbers exploit that gap.

The bolt count situation is slightly different. Bolts are real security features, but their value depends on three things together: how many there are, how large they are, and what steel body they are engaging with. 10-gauge steel is 0.135 inches thick. 12-gauge is 0.105 inches. 14-gauge is 0.075 inches. The difference between 10-gauge and 14-gauge is about 0.06 inches, which may not sound significant until you apply tool resistance logic: that additional thickness determines how long it takes to penetrate the body with a drill, a saw, or an angle grinder. At every gauge step, the resistance changes meaningfully.

Safe manufacturers typically use heavier steel on the door than on the body walls. An entry-level safe might use 12-gauge body steel with 10-gauge door steel. A higher-security safe will use 10-gauge or better on both. When reading a spec sheet, look for both numbers, not just the one listed first. A safe promoted as "10-gauge" that uses that gauge only on the door and lighter steel on the body is a real product category.

When a product page leads with "18 bolts" without disclosing the diameter, it has given you a number that captures attention while omitting the two factors that give that number its meaning.

Active Bolts vs. Dead Bolts

Most safes use a combination of active bolts and dead bolts. Active bolts move when the lock engages and are driven by the locking mechanism. Dead bolts are fixed in the locked position and do not retract when the lock is opened, providing pry resistance on the hinge side of the door. Both types contribute to overall door strength. A safe that advertises "live-locking bolts" is calling attention to its active bolt system, which is a legitimate feature, but the diameter and body steel context still apply.

"Military-grade" is not a specification. It is not a certification. It is not a standard that any independent body tests against or awards. When you see "military-grade steel" on a product page, you are reading a marketing phrase that a manufacturer applied to their own product. There is no external authority that verified it.

The same applies to phrases like "commercial-grade," "bank-quality," and "high-security construction." These phrases describe a manufacturer's self-assessment. They are not wrong in the way a false fact is wrong. They simply cannot be verified by anyone other than the manufacturer who wrote them.

The contrast is UL certification. When a safe carries a UL RSC or TL rating, an independent testing organization applies physical attack methods to the safe under controlled conditions and measures the result. The rating reflects what the safe actually resisted, not what the manufacturer says it can resist. A 10-gauge body is meaningfully more resistant than a 14-gauge body. If only one gauge is listed and the product page is heavy on marketing language, ask which part of the safe that gauge applies to.
