If you are storing photographs, film negatives, USB drives, or external hard drives in a Class 350 safe, those items will be damaged or destroyed in a fire that the safe's label would suggest it survived.
A Class 125 media-rated safe is specifically built to hold the interior below 125 degrees for the rated duration. These safes require substantially more insulation, which makes them heavier and more expensive than standard Class 350 safes.

The interior temperature was not controlled well enough to protect documents throughout.
The practical signal: insulation density and wall thickness correlate with how well a safe maintains interior temperature. A safe with less insulation mass heats up faster inside, which means the threshold can be exceeded before the duration ends. This is why two 30-minute-rated safes at very different price points are not the same protection. The label says the same thing. The insulation does not do the same work.

Cloud backup services replicate your data in real time to off-site servers. A fire that destroys everything in your home does not destroy a properly maintained cloud backup. For USB drives with personal photos, external hard drives with financial records, and most digital documents, the cloud backup solution costs less annually than the difference between a Class 350 and Class 125 safe. There are still items that belong in a fire-rated safe regardless of cloud backup status: executed legal documents with wet signatures, physical certificates, irreplaceable photographs, firearms, and cash. For those items, the correct safe rating is determined by what you are storing and what threshold you need.
