Is heavier steel really what separates this from a standard gun safe?
Heavier steel is the real difference: this safe carries a 7 gauge body where most standard gun safes use 12 or 14 gauge. Thicker steel resists cutting and prying longer, which buys time during a forced entry attempt. What we see is that gauge matters most once anchoring is already handled.
Does a higher gauge number mean thicker steel?
Gauge runs backward, so a lower number means thicker steel. A 7 gauge body is roughly twice the thickness of the 12 gauge used in mid-tier safes. This trips up more shoppers than any other specification, and we clear it up daily on the showroom floor.
What actually stops someone prying the door open at the edge?
Grade 8 anchor studs in the outer frame pass into the door, and a steel plate inside slides behind each stud as it closes. Prying the edge then works against the frame itself rather than boltwork. In our experience pry attacks are the most common method we see on residential safes.
What does it take to get a 1,600 pound safe into a house?
It takes a measured delivery path, equipment rated for the weight, and a floor that can carry it. We use stair climbers rated to 1,500 pounds and we walk the route before scheduling. The mistake we see most often is a customer measuring the doorway but forgetting the turn at the end of the hallway.
Is the hand-antiqued finish worth paying for?
The Ironworks finish costs more and adds weight, and it changes nothing about protection. The specifications are identical to the standard Thunderbolt. If the safe will be visible in a room you use, the finish is worth it. When it is going in a basement, we tell people to save the money.
