What a TL Rating Really Buys You

A TL-rated safe is tested by an independent lab that attacks it with real tools and times the result. TL stands for tool-resistant, and the number after it is how many minutes the safe held against an expert with hand tools, drills, and grinders.

The short version: a TL rating means a far harder burglary test, a much stronger fire test, and a safe built to be opened every day for years. Here is what each of those means.

The key distinction

TL is not the same as RSC

The rating on most home and gun safes is RSC, which stands for Residential Security Container. An RSC safe is tested by one person, for five minutes, with basic hand tools. A TL safe is tested by a two-person team, for fifteen minutes or more, with advanced hand and power tools.

Moving from RSC to TL is a change in category, not just a longer test. One label worth knowing: a safe that says only UL certified, with no level, almost always means the entry RSC rating.

Without an independent lab rating, a high-security claim is the manufacturer's word, not a tested result.

The three ratings

TL-15, TL-30, and TL-30x6

TL-15 (about 18x RSC)

Fifteen minutes of tested resistance against a two-person team using hand and power tools on the door. A strong choice for higher-value home collections and many small businesses.

TL-30 (about 36x RSC)

Thirty minutes against the same team and tools. This is the common requirement for jewelry, cash-heavy operations, and higher insured values.

TL-30x6 (36x+, all six sides)

The same thirty-minute test applied to all six sides, not just the door. Closing the body as an attack path makes this the top tier most buyers will ever need.

Built to last

TL-rated safes are built for a much higher duty cycle

A residential safe is built to be opened once or twice a day. A TL-rated safe is built for constant business use, so the door, boltwork, and lock are engineered to last far longer.

RSC residential safe

When you need more: TRTL and torch resistance

Some operations need protection beyond tools. A TRTL rating adds an oxy-acetylene cutting torch to the test, on top of the hand and power tools. These are used for jewelry retail, bank cash rooms, and similar high-risk settings.

Fire ratings compared

Not all two-hour fire ratings are equal

Two safes can both survive a two-hour fire test and keep the inside under 350°F. What separates them is the furnace temperature, and the difference is not small.

1,200°F test

2 hours

Two hours in the furnace. The interior has to stay under 350°F the whole time.

1,850°F test

2 hours

Two hours, the same 350°F interior limit, but a far hotter furnace working against the safe.

An 1,850°F two-hour test carries approximately 3.5 times the estimated thermal load of a 1,200°F test. Heat does not climb in a straight line. At higher temperatures, heat transfer becomes much more aggressive, especially radiant heat. Our ISM high-security line is tested at 1,850°F for two hours.

Thermal-load figures are a simplified estimate for illustration. Fire performance depends on the full UL 72 test procedure.

Read it honestly

What a TL rating does not cover

A TL rating measures one thing well: tool attack on the safe for the rated time. It does not measure fire protection, water resistance, or how the safe holds up after years of use, which is why fire and duty cycle are rated separately.

It also assumes the safe is anchored correctly and that no one else has your combination. Read the rating for what it tests, and treat fire protection, installation, and everyday habits as separate questions.

Who actually needs a TL-rated safe

You are a good candidate if you keep high-value jewelry, collections, cash, or business inventory at home or on-site. Businesses in jewelry, pharmacy, hospitality, and cash-handling often need a TL rating to meet an insurer's requirement.

Installation matters

The rating only holds if the safe is anchored

TL-rated safes under 750 pounds are required to be anchored to earn the rating in the field. A safe that is not bolted down can be carried off whole, which defeats the rating entirely.

We anchor every TL install and verify the substrate before we drill. Installation is part of the protection, not an add-on.

By a simple model of the testing, quite a lot. An RSC test is one person, five minutes, basic tools. A TL-15 test adds a second attacker, a longer window, and advanced tools, which works out to roughly 18 times more demanding, and a TL-30 test to roughly 36 times. This is a simplified illustration, not an official UL formula.

Not only that. Two safes can both run two hours and hold the same 350 degree interior limit, but a test at 1,850 degrees puts an estimated three and a half times the thermal load on the safe as a 1,200 degree test. Furnace temperature, not just time, is what makes a fire rating harder to pass.

A TL rating measures tool attack, not fire, so the two are rated separately. Many TL safes also carry a fire rating under UL 72, and our ISM high-security line is tested at 1,850 degrees for two hours. Check both labels when fire protection matters to you.

It means all six sides of the safe were tested, not just the door. A plain TL-30 rating tests the door only, so TL-30x6 protects against an attacker who tries to cut through the body.

They are engineered for a much higher duty cycle. A residential safe might see 20,000 to 30,000 open-and-close cycles in its life, while a TL-rated safe is built for 150,000 to 250,000, since it is opened many times a day in business use.
