Placement

Placement Rules That Actually Affect Performance

Getting the right dehumidifier and then placing it incorrectly is one of the most common mistakes our team finds during service calls. The placement rules are simple, but they are almost never included in the instructions that come with the unit.

Place It Low

Warm, humid air rises. The dehumidifier, whether a rod or a desiccant unit, belongs on the floor of the safe or on the lowest shelf, not on an upper shelf near documents or firearms. A rod placed high in the safe warms the air directly above it rather than creating a thermal gradient that draws humidity away from the full interior.

Keep It Away From the Lock Mechanism

The lock mechanism is the component most vulnerable to humidity-induced failure. A rod placed directly below or beside the lock housing, particularly in a back-of-door installation, concentrates heat against the mechanism rather than distributing it through the interior. Place the rod against the back or side wall of the safe, low and away from the boltwork.

Check the Outlet Connection for Rod Units

A rod that is drawing current keeps the interior slightly warmer than the ambient, which prevents condensation. A rod that is plugged in but not drawing current, because the outlet failed, the safe's outlet penetration has a loose connection, or the rod itself has failed, is providing zero protection. Check once a year that the rod is warm to the touch when you open the safe. If it is at ambient temperature, it is not working.

On a Concrete Slab, Add a Moisture Barrier

Concrete wicks moisture upward continuously. A safe sitting directly on a concrete slab in a garage is in contact with a slow, persistent moisture source that feeds the interior regardless of the dehumidifier's performance. A rubber-mat moisture barrier under the safe's feet is inexpensive and eliminates one of the most persistent humidity entry paths in a slab-foundation home.
